Mendoza Governor Slams AFA Leadership

Mendoza's governor, Alfredo Cornejo, accused the AFA of disorganization, frequent rule changes, and biased refereeing, which he claims led to Godoy Cruz's relegation.

Mendoza Governor Slams AFA Leadership

The governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejo, launched a harsh criticism against the leadership of Argentine football, directly pointing to the Argentine Football Association (AFA), the disorganization of championships, and the constant changes in the relegation systems. He also referred to the case of Godoy Cruz, recently relegated, and stated that the Mendoza club would have maintained its category 'if the rules had not been changed.' Cornejo clarified from the start that he speaks 'as a passionate football fan, not as a professional or leader,' but was nonetheless firm: 'Argentine football is going through a terrible moment. It is covered by the success of the National Team, which is a patch we love, but it cannot hide the poor organization of the tournament.' The official questioned the structure of the Argentine league, which currently has 30 teams and frequently changes its relegation system. 'It is the only league with 30 teams that changes the rules habitually. Godoy Cruz, if it had been by average, would not have been relegated,' he said, recalling that the AFA replaced the average system with the annual table. He also pointed out that these changes were made 'to benefit a particular club,' without naming names but indicating that the modification 'objectively changed the rules of the game.' Cornejo also spoke of a widespread climate of distrust over refereeing performance: 'There is suspicion about the refereeing, everyone has it.' In this sense, he noted the existence of controversial decisions, excessive delays in VAR reviews, and line drawings that 'do not generate confidence': 'It is objective how the VAR lines are drawn. I hope that independent journalism continues, as there is in politics.' The governor explained that he is not accusing a direct conspiracy against Godoy Cruz, but insisted that the changes promoted by the AFA influenced its relegation: 'I cannot say that it was relegated due to a conspiracy, but it is objective that they changed the rules. Godoy Cruz would not have been relegated under the previous system.'
